I've been privileged to teach courses in theology, religious studies, and philosophy to undergraduates at four different universities in the Chicago area: Loyola University Chicago, Lewis University, DePaul University, and Judson University. Three of those schools have some type of Catholic identity. One is Baptist and relatively progressive. This means that the students I teach take my courses as part of their required core. I find teaching this population to be a lot of fun. It's a challenge, but a stimulating one, to convince students that they actually should be in my classes. Once they observe that our study of life's deepest questions is connected to the way we understand ourselves, our worlds, our families and traditions, and our political and civic life, class becomes engaging -- especially when discussions include students of various faith traditions, or of no faith at all.
